Konark Sun Temple : Artistic Splendor - Architectural Marvel - UNESCO Sites India



Konark Sun Temple: Is located in Konark, a town in the Puri district of Odisha India. It is built by king Narasimhadeva I. The complex of Sun Temple is made up in the shape of a gigantic chariot having carved stone wheels, pillars and walls. Konark temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name of temple Konark is derived from Sanskrit words Kona (corner or angle) and Ark (the sun) and this temple is devoted to God Sun, also known as Surya. This monument was also known as Black Pagoda or Kaala Pagoda.


 Konark Sun Temple is 35 km far from Puri and 65 km from Bhubaneswar and has twelve pairs of carved stone wheels which are pulled by a set of seven horses in which 4 on the right while 3 on the left. Architectural style of Sun temple is in Kalinga architecture. It is oriented towards east side in order to get first rays of sunrise at the principal entrance. There are two other small ruined temples near this temple, one is called the Mayadevi Temple and second is Vaishnavite Temple. You can see sculptures of Balarama, Varaha and Trivikrama there. The temple is one of the most popular visiting sites in Bhubaneshwar.
